Is it safe to let my children play with my old stuffed animals?

My mom saved all my toys from when I was younger, and she recently brought them over to me to give to my kids. But I was wondering – will it be okay? The toys are mostly stuffed animals and dolls – nothing with lead paint, I am pretty sure.

They have been sitting in bags in my mom’s storage room for about 20 years. I smelled them and they smell okay, not too musty but not brand new either. Most of the toys are either stuffed animals or Cabbage Patch dolls. So, what do you think? Will it be okay?

TS Staff Answers:

Was the storage room damp? If so, toss them. You cannot eliminate mold spores. If it was dry, just keep the ones that are clearly machine washable.

I do have stuffed toys that are old that do not smell and were kept dry, but I won’t give them to my cousin’s daughter to play with until she is at least 5 since they can’t be thoroughly washed and dried. However, her mom is going to put them up on the wall to decorate her stuffed animal mecca (toys include an original Snuffleupagus as well as a large monkey).

My suggestions are overly cautious. If it were not for my brother’s dust mite allergy, my advice would have been quite different.

Edited to add: I find the one poster’s comment interesting. Your child shouldn’t play with the toys, but that you should donate them to Salvation Army for another child? Does that even make sense? Heck, we buy toys from garage sales all the time – just want to be sure that you can wash and dry them. Do not donate toys you would not allow your own children to play with.

How the heck do you hang the IKEA PS FÅNGST without making it crash down?

I just bought the IKEA PS FÅNGST for my son for toy storage. I used a hook and screwed it into my ceiling, but as soon as I put some stuffed animals in there, the hook wouldn’t support it. Any suggestions? I’m not a really great “handy woman” lol.

TS Staff Answers:

You didn’t put the hook into some wood in the ceiling. You need to find a joist, or you need to use a toggle bolt or similar thing that can support weight in drywall. Seeing as this is a kid’s room and the Fangst could get yanked on, I’d suggest the joist. You can sometimes find them by tapping, because a place that has a joist will make a less hollow sound, or you can buy a stud finder which will indicate the different density where a joist is. Then you will need a pilot hole into which you can screw a hook. You can make a pilot hole with a drill, using a drill bit, or using a screw which you take out of the hole it made so you can put the hook in it instead. It’s possible to do that with a hand screwdriver or a hammer and nail, but not always easy.

Here’s the situation: My two kids share a small bedroom. How do I decide what toys to keep and what to get rid?

They are 11 and 5. It seems like they only play with a few things when there is another kid in the house, which isn’t very often.
The biggest problem is stuffed animals, tiny toys, and books/drawing and coloring items. Help. I have no storage space, closet is full.

TS Staff Answers:

Stuffed animals can ALL go, unless there’s a special “sleep” one. Never get rid of books, you can put up shelves for them (no storage space needed, hang them on the wall).
Drawing/coloring items can also go on shelves that you put up- these are important for your children’s creative development.

Encourage your kids to read, and to be creative- kids with this kind of background EXCEL in life, because they learn how to think outside the box. Einstein probably had parents who encouraged free thinking!

Is it true that stuffed and roped dog toys are dangerous for dogs?

I have a 6 mo old puppy, and she quite aggressive, she loves to play, and tear things apart, what I was wondering is that I heard roped toys such as http://www.dogtoys.com/ropetoys.html are bad because if they tear it apart, a string or two might get stuck in their throat, and also that if they tear a stuffed animal apart, that they might accidentally eat a few of the cotton remains etc. Is this true?

True. Toys that are even partly destroyed should be taken away from them. There are toys that are allegedly indestructible for aggressive biters or big dogs. Get one that is appropropriate for his size. Below are some links.

Are stuffed toys good for dogs?

Last christmas, after begging my mom for a long time, I got my baby as my present. This baby was my dog Marley. If you have seen the movie, Marley and Me, you know how THIS Marley is. Example: Chewed a couch to shreds… it was leather = mom not happy.

We have always known that he likes his stuffed toys that we get from petsmart for him… (stuffed turtles, frogs, and raccoons.. limb-less after a day or two)
My mom is getting really tired of the fluff from the toys and said it was a waste of money to get them if he just shreds them. I debate with he that that is the point of dog toys, right?
She says we won’t get anymore, but I keep thinking that if he has his own toys he is less likely to chew OUR stuff. Is this a good idea??

Your dog is adorable! I have a chocolate Labrador, who lucky, hasn’t been too destructive, but has been known to go through plush, stuffed toys like water. It really is a huge waste of money to continue to buy the soft plush toys for her and we have such a hard time finding toys that she didn’t destroy after a few chews. We finally found the right toy brand for her, Kong. Not sure if you’ve heard of the name, but I’ve really only seen them in the color red and they have various balls and chews that are so unbelievably durable! Her favorite Kong is this toy, http://store.thenewyorkdogshop.com/kongmedium.html. You are able to put a treat inside the toy too, so it really keeps her busy for hours!

This site, http://store.thenewyorkdogshop.com/ has a really great selection of toy dog toys and the prices are very affordable!

Best of luck and I hope this helps!

The kong is great for dogs who aren’t socialized in the begining to play with toys because the stuff inside intices them investigate and play with it. All of my dogs are rescue dogs. This last one I got, Max, is very much the model dog for an unsocialized dog. Max has been with us for two weeks now. He can’t resist the kong. He’s not sure about ball yet. However the toys we toss that float in the water, he’s picking up to entice the other two dogs to play with him. Another toy they all like to play with is at Petsmart. It’s a robe that they can play tug o war with each other. It really holds up for a while. I also look for stuffed animals that are only made of cotton at garage sales because dogs love to shred things. You may even find they pick a toy that they don’t shred and carry around. Our biggest dog, Conrad loves to carry around Pooh. And it’s a certain one. Jordan followed suit with a lamb that makes noise. You just never know. Good luck on the puppy! Oh, and lots of rawhide chews. Mine have never taken to the nylon bones. They do like the rawhide chews!

Getting stuff for a 7 year old – cuddly or sweet?

Is it appropriate/in good taste to give a 7 year old a plush toy?cuddlyncute.?
If not, what else can you get them? and what is your favourite Easter themed sweet/chocolate? Did you see the crackly type eggs? from cadbury and the lil wrapped ones that usually come in an egg with a toy but minis wrapped differently with hazelnut. Are those Ferraro Rochers in an Easter Bunny shape a rip off or are they the same price as in normal box? Is getting the same type of sweet for someone all the time weird?-example Kinder surprises but different packaging or minis instead of large.

Thanks,

really? how come?

Dog obsessed with new toy and extremely protective of it. Doesn’t want to spend time with us or our other dog?

How should we handle this?

My 2 year old poodle has been reunited with an old friend (not really just a similar one). He has this plush bone toy we got him the other night, which resembles a lot his favorite toy as a puppy.

Now that favorite toy he had as a puppy we had to replace 2 or 3 times and when we brought our Terrier mix home well she destroyed “Bone” (thats what we call the toy) right in front of him and he was devastated and shocked it seemed.

Shortly after that they quit making bone. But a year and a half later we found a “BONE” and I thought it would be a nice present for him.

They don’t get a lot of toys because our Terrier is a stuffed toy murderer. So at first he was just happy to have the toy but now that toy is taking up all his time and attention (good for when I am trying to get things done)

My Terrier just wants to play with him but he goes off in another room with his “bone”. We want to spend time with him but if we come around he just takes his bone and goes to another sofa or room. And as of last night (3 days after having bone back) when we tried to take bone and put him up for the night, our Poodle growled at us.

Which is totally out of his character. Today when my Terrier was following him and just trying to play with him like they always do (she is like annoying kid sister really). He turned and growled at her to stay away and she took off running and hid behind me. (and she isn’t one to back down)

I tried to get him to drop “Bone”, he wouldn’t. I tried to take “bone” from him and he snapped at me. Something he has never done before. I got onto him for it. I eventually backed down though because I knew I wasn’t getting bone without getting bit. And I can’t get down and wrestle it away from him (I’m pregnant and pretty far along). So I figure he either has to sleep sometime or my husband will get it when he gets home and take it away for a few days.

I don’t want to take “bone” away for good. But my poodle has never acted this way about any toy ever in his life.

He was so happy to get “bone” back and I don’t want to take it away and break his heart but he can’t be acting like this, especially with a little one on the way.

Any advice or tips on how to make this work where he can keep “Bone” but not be so possessive of it?

Thanks
ADD: He doesn’t do this with any other toy and usually with any other toy he will give it when I say “Leave it or drop it”
But not “BOne”

Also he doesn’t care for treats or food really. He will eat at meal time but he is very un food motivated
ADD: The terrier isn’t trying to take his toy. She has little to no interest in toys anymore. She would rather lie around and gnaw on a good old bone than to take his little plush toy.

She just can’t get anywhere near him either without him freaking out
Again this behavior is only with “Bone” nothing else.

He shares his chew bones and other toys just fine. He doesn’t have an issue with food. Infact half the time we have to hand feed him to get him to eat (he has been sick a lot).

His only issue is with this Da*n toy
He has always been so good at sharing everything else but since he has had bone he has become totally antisocial

When a dog starts being possessive of a toy or food and aggressive toward people, that is not a good thing at all, and it may get worse or spill over into food aggression. He needs to understand that all toys, all food, and all other resources are YOURS, not his. Right now he thinks that bone is his. You need to nip this in the bud asap.
If your husband takes it away while he is sleeping, have him sit on the couch with the bone some other time while the dog is around and awake. Don’t let the dog come and take the bone or get too close to it. Just let him sit with it in his possession so that the dog knows it is your (or husband’s) bone, not his.. And that he only gets it when you say he can have it, and that it is yours to take away at any time. You are basically acting as the alpha dog or wolf in your “pack”, and the alpha dog has priority over the other dogs and controls the resources.
My dog got possessive over a toy and started to get that way and this is how I fixed it.
I would carry his toy around with me in my pocket or holding it, or sit on the floor with it so that the dog understands it belongs to me. The only time I would let him have the toy would be after he did something to earn it, like sit, stay, down.. Something. He could have it for a short time and then I would take it back. I would do this repeatedly so that he understood that the toy was mine and I would give it back to reward him for anything good he did. If he got snappy when I tried to take it away I would stand near him while he had the toy, and walk closer to him until I could step on the toy or stand between the toy and the dog, guarding it from him by doing nothing more than standing over it. No noises, no bending over, no touching.. Just quietly standing over it to show that it was mine. Eventually they will give up and understand that it is yours. I know you want him to have his comfort puppyhood toy, but if it is creating this aggression problem, he will have to deal with only having it when you say so. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this because you are pregnant, have your husband try it.
I also would not leave any toys out for the dog all the time. I would pick them up and put them in a toy box and only let him have his special toy at certain times when I was home. I also started feeding my dog in a designated area, at designated time of day, and only after he did something to earn the food like sit, stay, down, etc.

Just remember, NILF method – Nothing In Life is Free. You can teach your dog that you control the resources in the house without instilling any fear in him, or using harsh tones of voice or physical force, simply by making them earn any “rewards” (i.e. Food, treats, toys, affection) that they have typically had free fill of up until now.

When is a the proper time to wean your child off Disney films?

My kid is 14, male, and still watches Disney movies. Now I don’t just mean he sees them on random occasions or at friends house or something. I mean he watches Disney movies. All the time. He owns practically all of them. I just decided the other day that it was time I put my foot down. It was Friday night and he’s sitting down in the living room watching the Little Mermaid with his stuffed Ariel plush toy.
I line the small ones up on her changing table along the edge between the table and the wall. Well, I’m a great fan of DOMO, and I just wanted to know if you knew where I could get a DOMO stuffed animal. Not online, please, only in stores, because obviously I don’t online shop. Thanks! Oh, and stores in Canada [because I live in Canada] would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

How can I clean my vintage stuffed animals without hurting them?

I’ve got lots of Rainbow Brite dolls and other 80′s dolls and stuffed animals I played with as a little girl. I usually put them on shelves, hang them in a toy hammock, or pile them into a wicker backet in my room. Alot of them are white though and I noticed they are becoming dingy and dusty. They are over 20 years old so I can’t put them in a washer or a dryer.

Is there anyway I can clean them by hand without hurting them? I want them to look bright white again. I thought about putting them in plastic bags in the closet but I love to look at them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a great how to article that you can read at the below site:

Try this for size, fill a tub with some warm water and get a cake of laundry soap – the type that is gentle like sunlight and a small soft bristled brush and gently scrub any features that need special attention. Rinse under a little running water and put them in a shady but airy spot to dry naturally. If the clothes are removable take them off first and give them a wash separately and iron them when dry if needed, comb your dolls hair and they should look as good as new

Is a fleece toy safe for a chinchilla to play with?

My daughter has a pair of fleece gloves she wears when we’re playing with our chinchilla because she’s not a fan of his occassional nibbling. Last night during playtime, she took off her gloves, instead hiding her hands from him, and he grabbed a glove and was dragging it around, playing with it. It was truly adorable and he looked like he was having lots of fun with it. When I took it away after he let go for a second, he ran after it, trying to get it back (I didn’t want him ingesting it or putting a hole in it).

If I got him (or made him) a little fleece stuffed animal and removed the stuffing and any eyes or extras on it because I definitely know they’re serious chewers, would it be dangerous in anyway for him if he ate a little while playing and chewing? I know there are fleece hammocks for chins and it can be used as bedding instead of shavings (which I’m considering), but how dangerous is it if it is ingested by them? Can tthey digest it or will it make them sick/ cause blockage? If it isn’t good, I’ll just let him play with her gloves during playtime while I’m always watching. Any knowledge on this would definitely help.

TS Staff Answers:

Yes, fleece is safe. It is breathable and it doesn’t fray so they’re feet will not get stuck in it =) Fleece is the only material I use for my small pets =)
