Stuffed Animal Toy Patterns Faq’s

Laura asks…
Resources on making professional looking stuffed animals?
Does anyone know of some resources online to make professional looking stuffed animals? I’m talking about possibly tutorials on how to create and sew together complex shapes to make a desired end look for a stuffed animal or toy. I am not looking for information on creating simple sewn together fabric shapes (i.e. cut two pieces of fabric in the shape of a teddy bear, sew along the edges, turn inside out, stuff and you’re done).
I am in the process of trying to create the stuffed animals or toys I want to make in 3D on the computer and then unwrapping their geometry and laying it flat and printing the UV’s and using them as a pattern, but the results are not quite the same as the original shape intended. Are there stuffed animal or toy specific software packages out there that can do this better than say Maya or 3DS Max?

TS Staff Answers:
Most amigurumi (needle-worked stuffed toys) is made from crochet. However, there are some really cute free patterns on the Internet. Here are pages with free patterns–the first one on the first page looks a lot like Hello Kitty, depending on your color scheme:

http://knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/animals.php
http://www.knittingforcharity.org/knitting_instructions_for_five_amigurumi_projects.html
http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/patternFinder.fcgi?language=&store=%2Fstores%2Flionbrand&search=1&searchText=free+knitting+amigurumi&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=search
However, you don’t need to be concerned about signing up to enter the Lion Brand site, or the Patons, Bernat, Knitting Daily, or Ravelry sites either. They are safe, and the registration is mostly to keep track of entry to the site. If it disturbs you, though, you can sign up for a free G-Mail or Yahoo! Mail account and use it exclusively for registering on those pattern sites. The patterns you can download are really worth the extra trouble.

I can stare at stuff for a long time.. what’s wrong with me?
I see an operating fan. I stare at the moving blades, trying to follow their movement. For about… 5 minutes? That’s not supposed to be normal… right?
There are dozens of stuff I can stare at. How the patterns on the wall are formed, at the spinning wheels of a moving vehicle, the fur of an animal/stuff toy, the networks of veins on a leaf, and even, sometimes, how ‘cool’ it is that when I move my pen, then the blue ink comes out so suddenly………..
Am I really weird?
I stare at my skin, too. Like.. those…. patterns? Those tiny lines that are etched into my skin…….
Even the plainest things become the most interesting things..? Like the stars in the skies.
P.S. Fingerprints are intriguing, too…..
Couldn’t choose category.
I do this ALL the time..
It’s been about 2 years already?
Oh, and I don’t get bored doing that either =X

Perhaps you have A.D.D
Either that or you’re stressed out subconsiously and you need to focus on something
